Teen Ceramics Internship with Youth Crossroads of Berwyn

Ms. Maliya has been leading our Ceramics Internship Program in partnership with Youth Crossroads of Berwyn this fall, where we've teamed up with the nonprofit to teach teens the art of ceramics!

Since everyone at Youth Crossroads is new to working with clay, the class has spent the first three weeks learning foundational techniques like making pinch pots and press plates. By the fourth week, Ms. Maliya introduced the teens to the pottery wheel to spark their curiosity and let them experience a new challenge.

Now, they are working on a final three-week project: coil-built vessels. This project allows the teens to apply everything they've learned so far, including the scratch-and-attach method and using tools like the rib and heating tool to build strong, structured pieces. In our final class, we'll explore glazing techniques and learn how to apply glazes to complete their creations.
